3D Secure is a service offering from the credit card associations. Two principal versions are Verified By Visa and MasterCard SecureCode.
The 3D Secure process begins when a credit cardholder "registers" their credit card with the bank who issued the credit card. They receive a password from the bank which they should protect in the normal way.Then, when making a purchase online, they use this password to identify themselves to the bank. The bank will only allow the transaction to proceed if they correctly identify themselves. If the card details being presented are stolen, it is unlikely that the thief knows the associated password and therefore will not be able to proceed beyond this check point - the cardholder will have been protected from a fraudulent transaction. This makes an online credit card transaction safer - it is much closer to a "card present" exchange which occurs when a card is presented in person at a "real world" shop.
